Dear Travel Mart Buyer,

As Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Quito, it gives me immense pleasure to invite you to enjoy the night of September 9th in your hotel as well as an all-inclusive tour of the historic center as a courtesy of the city.

Everyone who works for the greater promotion of the Ecuadorian capital realises the importance of your presence at Travel Mart Latin America 2008. Our relationships with the international tour operators, who have given more time to their passengers’ experiences in Quito and its surrounding region, are special. They strengthen our conviction and firm resolve to make Quito a continent-leading tourist destination in the decades to come.

This year, Quito celebrates its 30 years as a Cultural World Heritage Site, the first city to be awarded the honour by UNESCO. Nestled in the high Andes amid the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Quito is a fascinating and privileged destination. On our doorstep, we boast the largest historic centre in the Americas – brimming with the spires, towers and cupolas of dozens of churches, chapels and convents – as well as a dynamic and thriving new town, replete with all the facilities and comforts the modern traveller could desire. Beyond Quito lie bright indigenous craft markets, cloud forests overflowing with endemic species, volcanoes to climb, views to admire, trails to blaze. Few cities in the world can boast such diversity so close at hand.

As a resident of this great metropolis, I take particular pride in our city’s heritage, and its recent renaissance. The city has spent $200 million on safeguarding its cultural heritage over the last seven years, more than any Latin American capital. We have been working on important infrastructure projects, improving water supplies, drains, public spaces and parks, roads and public transport. By 2011, for example, Quito will benefit from a new international airport, which will dynamize not only the tourism sector but all the Metropolitan District’s businesses.

We trust you will take up our offer to be part of Quito’s success story.

With my best wishes for your enjoyable stay,

Paco Moncayo
